Save money with our Home Energy Check tool

Our Home Energy Check tool can help you lower your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. After you answer some questions about your home, we’ll send you a personalised report with suggested improvements.

Why should I use the Home Energy Check tool?

The Home Energy Check tool inspires you to think about energy saving home improvements. The tool works out how much energy you may be using, then suggests changes to help you cut down the cost of your energy bills. The suggestions may include:

Lighting

For example, installing low energy lightbulbs.

Roof, wall and floor insulation

Various kinds of roof, wall and floor insulation are available depending on the age and building type of your home. For example, the Home Energy Check tool may suggest installing cavity wall insulation or improving the level of insulation in your loft.

Glazing and doors

For example, installing double or secondary glazing and uPVC external doors. Find out more about energy efficient glazing and doors from Energy Saving Trust.

Heating system upgrade

Various improvements are available to help improve the efficiency of your heating system, controls and other areas. For example, the tool may suggest insulating your hot water cylinder or replacing your old heating system.

Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

An EPC gives information about how energy efficient your home is and ways it could be improved. Getting an updated EPC could help speed up the process of accessing funding as it will help you find out what changes are needed in your home. To see if you have an EPC for your home, or to search for EPC assessors in your area, check the Scottish EPC register.

What should I do after receiving the home energy saving suggestions?

Suggestions from the Home Energy Check tool are listed with indicative installation costs. This gives you a rough idea of how much you would need to spend. You can also see the potential annual savings of installing those improvements. Based on this, you can create a plan of the improvements you would like to make.

You may be eligible for funding to put towards the energy saving improvements. You can use our Funding Finder tool to find out which grants, loans and discounts you may be eligible for.

If you have decided to install an energy saving improvement, we recommend getting three quotes from accredited installers before having any work done.
