Big Energy Saving Winter is back!
Once again, we are working with Citizens Advice Scotland to help people save energy, cut their bills, and get the financial support they’re entitled to.
Heating bills are a bigger worry for many households this winter with the energy market crisis. If you’re concerned about the rising price of fuel, struggling to keep up with your heating costs or find it difficult to keep your home warm, we can help – read on for tips on how to save energy and money.
Energy saving tips
Things like TVs and games consoles have a standby function that means they use some energy when they are not being used, or overnight. Switching them off at the switch or the wall when they’re not in use could save you around £40 a year.
Watch your water use
The cost of heating water makes up around 11% of your energy bills – around £140 per year on average. The less you waste, the less you pay. Try filling the kettle with what you need, rinse plates and wash veg in cold water instead of hot and use a washing up basin rather than leaving the hot tap running – it just takes 95 seconds to fill up a washing bowl.
Try a little DIY
Draught proof doors and windows and block up cracks in floors and skirting boards. Not only could you save around £30 per year, it helps make your home a more comfortable place to live.
If you don’t use your fireplace, insulating your chimney will make your home feel warmer. A chimney draught excluder could save you around £25 a year on your energy bills.
Insulate your pipes
Insulating exposed pipes is an easy DIY install – you can buy foam insulation tubes online or from a DIY store and slip them over your pipes. In a typical house, materials will cost around £20, and you’ll save around £5 a year on your energy bills plus it can help protect you from burst pipes from colder weather.
