Could you snap up a £140 discount on your energy bills? Here’s how…

WHD Mum son daughter HES news

You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2020/21 through the Warm Home Discount, which is opening up again for customers of most energy suppliers.

For those who qualify, the discount is applied directly by your energy supplier who will take this payment off your electricity bill. This usually happens between September and March.

How do you know if you qualify?

There are two ways to qualify and apply for the Warm Home Discount

  1. If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, and have done since at least 5 July 2020. If you do, then you should receive a letter between October and December 2020 telling you what you need to do to get the discount.
  2. If you’re on a low income or in receipt of certain other benefits – you can apply directly to your electricity supplier for help. Your electricity supplier decides who can get the discount so try to check sooner rather than later as the number of discounts suppliers can give are limited.

Don’t worry if you have a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter – you can still qualify. Your electricity supplier can tell you how they’ll apply the discount if you’re eligible – for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter.

Good to know…

You might be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity. But you’ll have to contact your supplier to find out first.

If you receive a Cold Weather Payment or a Winter Fuel Payment, applying for the Warm Home Discount won’t affect or disrupt these payments. It will just be a welcome boost to helping you keep your home warm and cosy.

It’s also important to know that not all energy suppliers offer the Warm Home Discount so make sure to check with your supplier to see if this is something that they offer.
