Create a greener home

Do you want to make your home more sustainable and energy efficient? With our support it’s easier than you think.

If you’re thinking about improving your insulation or installing a renewable system such as a heat pump, solar panels or energy storage, we’re here to help.

Check your green energy options

If you’re thinking about installing a renewables system, the first thing you’ll want to do is check to see if your home is suitable. You can check which renewable technologies are suitable for your property using the Home Renewables Selector.

This online calculator, which is free to use, will give you a tailored report showing the most appropriate green energy options based on your property details. It assesses how much carbon and money you could save by installing specific technologies too.

See the positive changes you could make and how much you could save today.

Renewables

If you want to reduce your carbon footprint and energy use, you may want to consider generating your own electricity and heat using renewable energy. For example, you might want to install solar panels to generate your own electricity, or a heat pump to provide heat and hot water.

Financial incentives to install

Sometimes, the electricity you generate will be more than you can use or store. If you register for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), you can receive payments for any excess energy you generate and send back to the grid.

You may be eligible to apply if you have one of the following renewable energy generating technologies:

  • solar PV panels
  • a wind turbine
  • hydro
  • anaerobic digestion
  • micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP).

Find out more about the SEG and the savings you could make on Energy Saving Trust’s website.

Home Energy Check

Use our Home Energy Check to find out how you can achieve lower energy bills and a more comfortable home. You’ll receive a report with details of improvements that we recommend, based on the information you provide.

If you’ve already checked your green energy options and have an idea of which home renewable systems might be suitable, our specialist advisors are on hand to help you with next steps.

We can:

  • assess your property’s energy performance and explain your energy options for saving energy or generating your own heat and power
  • give you a tailored report including recommended improvements, potential energy bill and carbon savings, and any technical and planning considerations around installing
  • help you find an accredited installer and provide ongoing support throughout the installation
  • help you find funding including grants and interest-free loans funded by the Scottish Government, to help with the costs.

Visit a green home

Want to know what it's really like living with renewables? You can read stories from home improvers who’ve already installed on the Green Homes Network.

The Green Homes Network features more than 300 homes across Scotland, with homeowners who have already installed renewable technologies who want to share their experience about the energy efficiency improvements they’ve made to their property, the cost savings, and to help you make an informed choice. You can even book a visit to a green home and see the technologies for yourself.
