The challenge

When Mr Ratter contacted Home Energy Scotland for energy advice, he wanted to know how to manage the high costs from his electric underfloor heating. Although his home wasn’t experiencing any major energy issues, he also wanted to reduce his home’s carbon emissions and improve his home’s overall energy efficiency.

“I had heard about Home Energy Scotland through friends,” he said. “They spoke highly of the service, so I thought it would be worth getting in touch to see what support was available.”

The solution

Advisors from Home Energy Scotland’s Highlands and Islands advice centre gave Mr Ratter the expert, impartial advice and support he needed to explore greener and more affordable heating options.

An advisor visited his home and worked with him to assess his current heating system and energy use, and outlined the potential savings he could make by upgrading his home’s insulation, changing to a lower cost heating system, and generating his own renewable energy.

The outcome

With our advice and support, Mr Ratter installed:

  • additional loft insulation
  • an air source heat pump
  • solar photovoltaic panels to generate his own electricity, which can also be used to power his heat pump
  • a storage battery to save any excess electricity generated for later use.

Mr Ratter was also given tailored advice on how to reduce his overall energy use. By taking advantage of the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan to help cover the costs – he received a grant with rural uplift and an interest-free loan - he says he felt confident about his investment.

“Without Home Energy Scotland’s guidance, I wouldn’t have been able to make these improvements,” he said. “They helped me find funding to cover the costs and find practical solutions for better heating and insulation.”

He added: “Since making these improvements, I’ve reduced my energy bills and carbon footprint, and my house feels much more comfortable too.”
