A smart meter can help you save energy and money by reducing your energy consumption. It allows you to keep track of your gas and electricity use and see what you’re spending in real time, and it automatically sends regular readings to your supplier. This means that you don’t need to remember to send your meter reading to your supplier, and your bills will be 100% accurate.

How do smart meters it work?

A smart meter is made up of the meter itself, and an in-home display. The meter uses a secure data network to automatically send your meter readings to your supplier at least once a month.

You will also get an in-home display that shows you how much energy you’re using and what it’s costing you. You can use this to help find what is using the most energy by turning off appliances and looking on the display at the running cost of what’s left switched on. You can also check to see if you’re using a lot of energy overnight, when most things should be turned off or using very little.

How do I get a smart meter?

You just need to get in touch with your energy supplier. They’ll let you know when one can be installed which, in most cases, will take about 90 minutes. There’s no upfront charge for the installation and, if you rent your home and pay your own energy bills, you don’t need your landlord’s permission to get a smart meter installed.
