Easter marks the arrival of spring - a time for fresh starts, family gatherings and a good tidy‑up. It’s also an ideal moment to rethink how we use energy, adopt simple new habits and enjoy the season while keeping costs down.

Save energy with Easter cooking

Easter is a great time to enjoy local, seasonal ingredients; this can cut your carbon emissions because local and seasonal foods don’t need long-distance transportation. Spring brings plenty of fresh produce to choose from, including asparagus, radishes and leafy greens like kale and spinach. As the weather warms up into May, more fruit and vegetables come into season, such as strawberries and rhubarb. Cooking with seasonal ingredients not only offers better nutritional value but is also more sustainable than relying on imported produce.

Once you start cooking, small habits can make a big difference to how much energy you use. Match the size of your pots to the right hob and keep lids on to retain heat and speed up cooking.

Boiling water in the kettle before transferring it to a saucepan saves both time and energy. Keeping the glass on your oven door clean means you can check on your Easter bakes without opening the door and letting heat escape.

Reduce your food waste

Easter is an ideal time to get creative with leftovers. Remember to let any hot dishes cool before refrigerating them so your fridge doesn’t work harder.

Roast meat can be turned into an easy meal the next day — pair it with chutney and jacket potatoes for a simple lunch or dinner. Hot cross buns freeze well, helping you avoid waste and keep a favourite treat for later.

Foil‑wrapped chocolate eggs can be crushed and mixed into cookie dough for a fun twist, and leftover chocolate can be melted into warm milk for a homemade hot chocolate.

By combining mindful cooking with smart reuse of leftovers, you can enjoy a low‑waste, energy‑efficient Easter that’s just as delicious.

Spring clean with an energy efficient twist

Spring cleaning is a great chance to refresh your home while improving its energy efficiency. As you move from room to room, try these simple steps.

  • Pull out large appliances like your fridge and clean behind them - dust build‑up can make them work harder.
  • Replace any broken bulbs and switch to LEDs - these use less energy and last much longer.
  • De‑scale your kettle and give your oven a deep clean to help them run more efficiently.
  • Dust behind radiators, even if they look clean – it will help them heat up quicker and distribute warmth more effectively.

These simple tasks not only freshen your home but also support lower energy use throughout spring. Discover more spring tips in our article about getting ready for the clocks changing.
